Katrina High Water Mark Mural design contest deadline approaching

The deadline to submit your art for the Katrina High Water Mark Mural Design contest is a week from tomorrow.

The two artists selected will paint murals reading ‘Welcome to BSL’ on concrete slabs that were constructed to memorialize the high-water level after Hurricane Katrina.

The two slabs are located at the northern most entrance to the Bay: I-10 at exit 13, which is Highway 603.

They’re calling for artists to submit designs inspired from the 1950s ‘Greetings from’ beachside postcards and includes Coast themes and icons showing off the city’s unique character.

The concrete slabs have sat blank for more than 12 years and the city is hopeful that by painting over them, the entrance will become more welcoming to business. Steve Barney with Leadership Hancock County said, “We believe in this concept of creative place making where public art can help change the dialogue and bring the community together. So, people coming off of I-10 can catch a glimpse of what they’ll see at the beach, tying all of Bay St. Louis together.”

There will be an adult division, which is open to professional and amateur artists in the city limits, and a youth division, open to all public, private, and home-schooled students in Bay St. Louis.

The deadline for the contest is Friday, February 25th and you can submit your design to BSLmuralcontest@gmail.com.
