Jury finds Harvill Richardson not guilty
After a two day long retrial, a jury found Harvill Richardson not guilty of manslaughter or murder six years after he was previously convicted of murder back in 2011 for the 2009 death of Rudy Quilon.
The jury deliberated for nearly three hours after testimony concluded Thursday. The court heard from several witnesses including Harvill Richardson. He remained adamant that he acted in self-defense when he shot Quilon outside of his home. He told the jury Quilon was making threats and coming after him when he decided to run inside and grab his gun.
The prosecution argued that Richardson could have barricaded himself inside the home and called police in the time it took to grab the gun.
Richardson’s attorney, Michael Crosby, says he will now seek compensation for his wrongful incarceration due to 2011’s unfair trial. “But based on wording of the statute it clearly appears to me that my client qualifies to be compensated. Apart from that, even without that statute, just constitutionally, when a person has been denied their constitutional rights to a fair trial they should be entitled to sue anyway and that’s what we intend to do.”
According to the statute, Richardson is eligible to receive $50,000 for each year of incarceration.
