Judgement Against Mike Byrd Overturned
Former Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd no longer has to pay $260,000 to a female deputy in a sexual harassment and emotional distress lawsuit.
A federal judge orders a recent court order be overturned due to insufficient evidence to support the claim. This order stems from a September 2015 trial where a female deputy accused Byrd of sexually harassing her and threatening to demote her when she refused his advances.
While a federal jury shot down the victim’s claim of sexual harassment, the jury did order Byrd to pay $260,000 in damages for emotional distress. This week, a federal judge ruled Byrd does not have to pay for emotional distress due to insufficient evidence to reasonably support the case.
