Judge Rules East Beach in Ocean Springs is a Public Beach
A long time dispute over who has ownership of East Beach in Ocean Springs has finally come to a close.
After some confusion and a drawn out battle over ownership, a chancery court judge has ruled state ownership over the beach. This officially declares it open to the public.
It all started in 2009 when the city attempted to build a sidewalk along the beach, angering some homeowners who claimed sections of the beach in front of their homes as part of their private property.
News 25 spoke with some visitors to East Beach who say they’re happy about the ruling that allows them to continue soaking up the sun at their favorite beach spot.
East Beach Visitor Nicole Woodbury said, “I love the city of Ocean Springs. I’m so happy that it is good and okay that we come here. This is, like I said earlier, one of our favorite spots. We love Ocean Springs, so absolutely we will be here many years.”
East Beach visitor John Hickey said, “I’m really excited it’s going to be public because I think it’s a great beach for everybody to come to and bring your kids and hangout, have a picnic or whatever.”
City leaders say they are happy with the decision.
