Joint land use study findings
This morning, Harrison County officials met to discuss findings from a joint land use study, carried out between the City of Gulfport and the Seabee Base.
The study began last June, focusing on the base itself, the gun range in Woolmarket, and the western maneuver area near Stennis Space Center. All of these areas are utilized for Seabee operations and training.
The study is mainly comprised of research aimed at providing data on how to best maintain the working and living relationship between the military and the community as both the city and the base continue to grow. Elaine Wilkinson with the Gulf Regional Planning Commission said, “We have a phenomenal opportunity, working with them to make sure that we as a community can support them, but we wanted to look at things as the urban areas grow around the bases and their operations to make sure that we’re doing what we can to understand this.”
The commission behind this joint land use study is also currently carrying out a similar study for the City of Biloxi and Keesler Air Force Base. The findings will be presented to city and county boards along with suggestions for improved partnership between all parties involved.
