Joining Hands For Clean Water

Locals are joining hands along the Gulf Coast, standing in solidarity and demanding protection for our coast from new oil and gas leasing.
People across the nation are joining hands across the sand as a day of unity to raise awareness about the consequences of offshore drilling. Several coastal residents want the Mississippi state leadership to know that some still do not want new drilling off the coast. On Saturday, they stood along the shoreline next to Ken Combs Pier, chanting for clean water.
Director Of Restore Mississippi Sound Sharon Hayes said, “The water’s dirty, we don’t want to get in it. So, if we can raise awareness to stop the pollution before it gets worse, then perhaps we can do some things to clean it up and make it better.”
Water Program Director Of Gulf Restoration Network Andrew Whitehurst said,“The oil industry is very strong and a lot of people get their paychecks from it but, if people don’t at least begin to think about solar, wind, as real alternatives then we’ll stay set in our ways. Were like a voice crying in the wilderness for something to change.”
Hayes says raising awareness gets our foot in the door then the next step is to bring in money from the BP oil spill to improve water quality in the Gulf of Mexico.
