John Harrison Doucet’s Homecoming
Gulfport native John Harrison Doucet has finally returned to Gulfport after making a miraculous recovery.
What a journey it has been for John Harrison Doucet and his family and friends.
The entire Gulf Coast has been in Doucet’s corner since September of last year when he was shocked by power lines that came in to contact with a sailboat he was towing at the Gulfport Yacht Club. John Harrison received severe burns all over his body and lost both legs, as well as an arm. Many doctors thought he might not survive the accident, but today he proved that with love and support, anything is possible.
At 2:30 this afternoon, an angel flight touched down in Gulfport, bringing John home at long last. He had a smile on his face when he exited the plane and he threw up a thumbs up for a large crowd of family and friends that have been waiting for this reunion for six months.
Tommy Doucet, John’s father, said, “It’s great. It’s great. It’s what he was looking for. He wanted to come home. Greatest thing you could ask for and it just feels wonderful.”
Dawson Doucet, John’s brother, said, “He’s just so ready to get back. I think, hopefully, he’ll just keep striving to go harder and get out of this situation and get going and get walking again hopefully soon.”
John’s mother, Ruthie McMullen, said, “Thank you for a lot of prayers and the love of all of our friends and family from all over. It’s not just Gulfport, but all over and he is a miracle and this is where we need to be.”
John Harrison will relax on the Gulf Coast a bit before returning to Augusta for check-ups and to begin the fitting process for prosthetics.
