John Finn DDG 113 sails away
The John Finn sailed away from Ingalls Shipyard this morning to head to Hawaii. The DDG 113 will be commissioned at Pearl Harbor in mid-July.
Over 270 Ingalls shipbuilders worked on the destroyer since construction began in September 2012. The ship is named for U.S. Navy Lieutenant John Finn, the first Medal of Honor recipient of World War II.
Officials tell News 25 they are proud to watch the ship sail away after working on it for years. Paint Foreman Artensie Sabino-Grace said, “This was a great opportunity for us to work on the first DDG since 110 and have the sailors to ride the John Finn which is part of the Honolulu where they’re going to have the ceremony at.”
Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias said, “John Finn and what he did took the fight to the Japanese during Pearl Harbor, wounded, and still fought through. It’s a great namesake for this ship and we’re glad to be a part of it.”
The DDG 113 will make several stops before being commissioned at Pearl Harbor.
