Job Corps Students Visits Port of Gulfport

The Job Corps partnered with the Port of Gulfport to teach a whole new generation about jobs that could be potentially available to them one day. Today News 25 spoke to one of the female students who said she’s anxious to take a job in a predominately male field.
Twenty year old Breanna Thomas knew she wanted to work in the electrical field since she was just a young girl. She was inspired by her grandfather, who was an electrician for many years. “I’ve been watching him for years. He’s actually retired now and I really liked it and I used to help him with a lot of stuff at home. So, it made me really want to do it and I really like it.”
Breanna is one of two girls in the pre-electrical program with the Job Corps and today they took a special tour of the Port of Gulfport. “It’s fun to be around a bunch of guys and they’re like ‘okay, well this lady can’t do it’, well everybody can do it. Anybody can do it,” said Thomas.
They got the opportunity to learn from Doleac Electrical, one of the many companies involved with the port. Today, they explained new and upcoming projects the students could potentially become a part of.
General Manager of Doleac Electrical Warren Saucier said, “We’re hoping to provide these students with an opportunity to come and apply for our apprenticeship program and offer employment for them.”
The port sees this as an opportunity to bring local job training programs and businesses together to create a more skilled workforce, all while meeting HUD’s section 3 job requirements.
Mel Arsenault, Port of Gulfport compliance director, said, “This opportunity today with the folks from Doleac and Job Corps was a way to look at a pipeline of younger workers who might be interested in work that will eventually be at the port or for other employers.”
This is something Breanna Thomas hopes to one day be a part of. “Just being able to build that, and being able to help our community and making something bigger and better for us.”
Each year the Job Corps provides training and support services to about 60,000 young people in more than 100 career technical areas across the nation.
