Jim Hood announces gubernatorial campaign
Mississippi’s democratic attorney general is launching his 2019 campaign for governor by criticizing the Republican-led legislature for enacting corporate tax cuts.
Jim Hood is the only Democrat currently holding statewide office in Mississippi. He announced his gubernatorial campaign today in his hometown of Houston, Mississippi.
Hood enters the race with solid name recognition after winning four terms as the state’s top legal officer. However, he starts at a financial disadvantage.
Republican Lt. Governor Tate Reeves is also expected to run for governor and has $5.4 million in campaign cash to Hood’s $656,400.”Why are we not moving? We’ve had a three percent growth rate total since the great recession and the reason is some of our policies. If our economy is bad that’s caused our brain drain. We’ve caused more kids to leave our state than any other state in the union in the past six years. The brain drain is affecting us. That’s our best and brightest and our children are our economic development engine. That’s our future,” said Hood.
Republicans have held the governor’s office in Mississippi for six of the past seven terms. Republican Governor Phil Bryant cannot seek re-election because of a two-term limit.
