Jeff Jordan leads St. Stanislaus into a new era in 2017
Mississippi’s all-time leader for passing yards and touchdowns is now an LSU Tiger, leaving some massive shoes to fill at quarterback for the St. Stanislaus football program. This next life after Myles Brennan collides with Jeff Jordan’s first year at the helm, posing some major question marks for the Rock-A-Chaws in 2017 as they enter a new era.
Before there was ever Myles Brennan, there was Dylan Favre. Now following in that record-setting lineage of SSC quarterbacks is Jakob Greer. “It’s an honor to be starting quarterback here. We put up a lot of stats in the past so that’s kind of nerve-racking stepping in that role, but I’m a hard-working guy and I’m ready to step up to the task.”
The first year signal caller is no stranger to starting games, but only at safety as a sophomore and linebacker as a junior. “I’ve helped my team out on defense, but QB is definitely what I’ve been waiting for my whole entire life so I’m pumped for it,” said Greer.
Also eager for 2017 is Jeff Jordan who takes over as head coach in place of Bill Conides at the start of his third season with the program. “It’s a pleasure to be at St. Stanislaus, such a storied institution where football is important. It means a lot to the community, it means a lot to the parents, it means a lot to the players and administration, so it’s an honor for me to be the caretaker of this storied place and it’s just a really exciting time for us right now.”
Excitement coming from the challenge of replacing four division I players on offense and the prospect of making the Monday morning quarterbacks eat their words. Safety J.D. Rutherford said, “Just that we’re not going to be good. Not going to win a lot of games. Not going to win district. Predicted to be pretty much last in district, that kind of stuff.”
“There’s a lot of doubt around the Coast that how good is Stanislaus going to be, how can they replace those guys? So it’s an exciting time. And I think the kids are up to the challenge, the coaching staff is up to the challenge and it’s going to be fun,” said Coach Jordan.
Whether or not the Rocks can live up to the recent tradition of 34 wins over the last three seasons and two trips to the 4A state title game during that span remains to be seen. In the meantime, they’ll be listening. “We’re just going to prove people wrong. We’re going to let the haters fuel us, to say it simply,” said Rutherford.
“I think our identity is going to be like J.D. said proving all the doubters wrong. And we might not be as big as any other team, fast as any other team but we’re going to give it our all on every single play and that should make the difference,” said Greer.
“That is our mantra. Who’s going to step up, who’s going to make an impact and let’s put our own mark on this football team in 2017,” said Coach Jordan.
St. Stanislaus will take the field for its first action of the year next Friday versus Gulfport in a pre-season jamboree.
