Longtime Jackson County supervisor Melton Harris dies

Jackson County officials confirmed to News 25 that District 2 Supervisor Melton Harris has died.

He was 75.

Harris died at his home on Tuesday morning. The cause of death is not known at this time.

The Grenada County native was elected to the Jackson County Board of supervisors representing District 2, representing Moss Point and parts of Pascagoula, from 2008 to 2011 and again for the 2012 to 2015 terms. He was elected again in 2019 for the 2020 term.

Harris served as board president in 2011 and 2016 and was serving his third term as president this year.

He also served as vice president in 2010, 2015 and 2020.

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors will appoint a person to fill Harris’ position within 10 days.

He retired from Chevron Refinery in 1999. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam and was a graduate of Tougaloo College.

He is survived by his wife, the former Portia J. Martini of Moss Point, and three children, Donise, Marcus and Melani.

He also was a member of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
