Jackson County Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Master Plan
Citizens of Jackson County can expect some better ways to enjoy nature now that the county has laid out the Jackson County Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Master Plan.
This plan’s goal is to transform the county into a safe and comfortable place for citizens to walk, bike, and paddle.
The Jackson County Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Master Plan lays out a clear vision for the future of each city. It has recommendations for new sidewalks, walking trails, and biking lanes and trails through the county. It’s not just activities on land that are gaining the spotlight, the plan also mentions recommended blue ways and paddle boat launch locations. Ocean Springs Mayor Shea Dobson said, “Jackson County is a big county and you know all the municipalities we share a lot, but we all have our own flavors and it makes us unique. Being able to connect the entire county, it’s just going to be a really good thing to help everybody with exercise and you know just bring Jackson County together.”
Although none of the projects listed in the plan are underway, it is serving as more of a guideline for the future with cost and ways to make these projects happen. This plan comes after a long study in conjunction with citizens and what they want to see in their county. Gautier Mayor Phil Torjusen said, “This is a project that was really dictated by the people. There were several different meetings in each city where citizens came and they gave their ideas. There were maps at each of the meetings and people would walk up there and mark off what they needed and over time this is how it came out.”
Now, those active citizens are excited for what’s ahead. Ocean Springs resident Penny Basque said, “This is a healthy community and we try very hard to stay healthy and active and any alternative to keep things going. Bike trails would be excellent. I’ve got a mountain bike myself and it’s hard to find places to ride if you are in a limited space so it would be excellent.”
