Isle of Caprice 90th Anniversary
The newest exhibit at Biloxi’s Maritime and Seafood Museum features one of the most mysterious pieces of Biloxi’s nearly forgotten past.
The Isle of Caprice Resort was a destination for vacationers in the 1920’s before being lost to a fire. Shortly afterwards, the island sank below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico.
The island’s disappearance means the visitors and many younger Gulf Coast natives might have never heard of the resort if it wasn’t for the exhibit which chronicles everything from the beginning stages of the resort to the sinking of the island.
Museum Director Robin Krohn David said, “It’s very intriguing to the public and tourists to learn about the Isle of Caprice. It’s disappeared and came back twice. So the big question is: will it ever reappear for a third time? This is the 90th anniversary for the opening of the Isle of Caprice.”
Many older sea-goers in Biloxi still remember the artisan spring well left behind by the resort which provided them with fresh water until it was damaged and the last evidence of the isle was gone.
