Investigation of I.E.D. Found in Vancleave Continues

The investigation of an explosive device found outside a residential home in Vancleve is ongoing.

A pill bottle containing gun powder and BBs, wrapped in duct tape with a homemade fuse was found. That’s what the Biloxi Bomb Squad collected from 2601 Poticaw Bayou Road in Vancleave. The resident of the home tells News 25 she assumed it was trash and was going to throw it out until her husband said it looked like something more and they called the sheriff’s department. Jackson County Interim Sheriff, Charles Britt, says, “It appeared to have a fuse of some type and some burnt surfaces on it, looked like someone tried to light it.”

The Biloxi Bomb Squad is the only bomb squad in south Mississippi recognized by the F.B.I., which is why they were called to the scene. John Miller, Biloxi Police Chief, say says, “Yesterday we were called and were told about an explosive device in Jackson County, so we responded and there indeed was something there.”

After rendering the explosive device safe, the Biloxi Bomb Squad collected it from the driveway and has now handed over that evidence to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (A.T.F.) for further investigation. Britt also says, “It’s quite apparent that it was placed there by someone and obviously it was on purpose. What the motives were, I can’t tell you.”

News 25 spoke with A.T.F. officials who say they are continuing to investigate the matter.
