Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week, St. Stanislaus Baseball’s Tate Murphy!

In the world of baseball, hitting the ball 3 times out of 10 is pretty good, which means you’re batting .300. This past week, our Student Athlete of the Week batted 1.000, going 8- 8 in his past three games which increased his batting average to .549. Introducing the St. Stanislaus shortstop with a hot bat, Tate Murphy!

Week one of regional play is in the book for high school baseball teams on the Mississippi gulf coast and one team over the bridge has remained perfect. The St. Stanislaus Rock-A-Chaws currently lead class 3A Region 8 with a 4-0 district record and an overall record of 12 -4 with their only in-state losses coming from teams in class 7A. Senior Tate Murphy credits their success to their defense and his ace on the mound.
Heavily contributing to those Rock-A-Chaw wins is the four-year starter and shortstop, Tate Murphy. This past week, Murphy was seeing beach balls at the plate with a spotless 8- 8, 1.000 batting average his past three games. During those plate appearances he hit a homer, triple and three doubles crossing the plate seven times and bringing in two other runners. He didn’t just “get lucky” at the plate last week either, but he’s been producing video game numbers for a long time now. The senior captain is currently sitting at a .549 batting average with 24 RBI’s and 28 hits, ten of those being over the fence. The sport has taught murphy that there’s some curve balls every now and then and even he can get humbled with a strikeout which isn’t often though because that hasn’t happened in almost a month.
With only six regular season games left on the Rock’s schedule, post-season ball is fast approaching. Last month, Murphy took the trip to Jackson to watch the Rock-A-Chaws bring home a basketball State Championship title, and he hopes the boys of the diamond can take care of business the same one. Regardless of how their season ends, Murphy won’t be hanging up his cleats just yet as he’s currently committed to playing for the prestigious Pearl River Community College program. We look forward to seeing him suit up in the maroon and gold soon, but before that we wish the Tate and the Rocks the best of luck in the rest of their 2026 season!
