Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week: OLA Volleyball’s Ava Davis

This week’s WXXV Student Athlete of the Week is Our Lady Academy volleyball’s senior setter Ava Davis.

The sport of volleyball is known for its high energy, hard hits, and explosive plays, but a lot of those elements wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for one position: the setter.

It’s the setter’s responsibility to communicate, get the second ball, and place it where it benefits others to literally set up people for success.

Introducing you to Our Lady Academy’s constant and outstanding setter: Ava Davis. “Being around these girls and them giving me the confidence to lead them and show them the support that they obviously deserve, it really just builds me up each time I come in the gym. I love to make them look good. I love to set them up for success. If they’re putting the balls down, that’s a team point. It’s not just one person, it’s all of us together.”

Together, they’re just about unstoppable. Davis is a senior setter for the prestigious Our Lady Academy volleyball team.

Whether you’re walking in the halls or entering the gym, you’re quickly greeted by trophies and dates that represent titles that were hard earned by OLA.

Davis has been a part of two state championship teams and was most recently named the most valuable player in 2023, but the setter and Lady Crescents still claim there’s unfinished business. “These girls have worked so hard from the end of last school year all the way to now. It’s just nonstop, and I truly would not be where I am without these girls. They are really my rock and I could not do anything without them. We are one team, one unit, and all together. Holding that title as State Champions is something we keep highly in our graces. I think we depend on that title so much and that helps us keep our mindset focused throughout the whole season, so we’re constantly working towards that State Title.”

After all, state championships are a very coveted title and winning it back-to-back years is beyond impressive, but what’s most important to Davis are her teammates and learning more about herself. “I think this sport has taught me so many things to do with how I show myself to other people and how other people interpret me and my actions. I think this sport has taught me so much to do with that and it really makes me be the best person I can be.”

The decision that has quite possibly taught her the most was choosing our Lady Academy her sophomore year. She said it was scary at first and hard to open up, but she knew it’s where God was leading her. “I really just want to thank God for this opportunity to be here at this school with these girls. He really has given me so much and this is a God thing. Me being here and winning these State Championships and talking to you right now, this is a God thing.”

Davis went on to say that she believes God will lead her next steps as well when she decides which of her offers to accept as to where she’ll choose to play volleyball at the next level.
