Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week: George County’s Deuce Knight!
Explosive…dominant…all-star…and just simply elite. These are just a few of the many words used to describe one of the best athletes the state of Mississippi has ever seen. He officially has five stars next to his name, and he’s our very deserving WXXV Student Athlete of the Week. Introducing George County’s playmaker and leader, the one and only Deuce Knight.
Ever since regional play began, the George County football team is 3-0 with a combined 167 points score, and 68 of those alone coming from their most recent matchup. In that game, their quarterback Deuce Knight accounted for over 650 yards and tied the state record of nine total touchdowns. Knight is thrilled about the Rebel’s success and recent performances, but he’s got one thing in mind and that’s the next competition.
“The past few weeks we’ve been scoring a lot of points,” senior Deuce Knight said. “Those are all great teams that we’ve played, but you know Picayune has been a top dog in 6A for a long time, so we just want to show people that we’re up there and we’re a real team and that we can compete and go against anybody.”
With a guy like Knight in their pocket leading their offensive weapons, they truly can go against anyone. Just last month, Knight was one of the three coast athletes named a Mississippi All-Star, and just last week he officially received the label he’s been patiently waiting for: Deuce Knight, five star quarterback.
“It feels great!” said Knight. “Obviously when you’re a high school kid you want to see your hard work shown to the public and everything and that’s good and everything, but I’ve got a bigger goal than that and that’s to try to win a State Championship with my team, so that’s all I’m focused on.”
Championships are truly all Knight ever thinks about. People know all about Knight’s success on the gridiron, but an untold side of him are his three track state titles, two in long jump and one in high jump. He’s as competitive as it comes, and he strives to be the best he can be in all aspects of life.
“Everyday God allows you to wake up, so why not try to go out and do everything you can to the best of your ability,” Knight said confidently. “Obviously my family as well. They’re not going to settle for just being mediocre, so I just want to go out and put a name out for my family. All these guys around me, I don’t want to let them down, so I’ve got to get out there and give them my best.”
His best is also Mississippi’s best! Currently the highest ranked quarterback in the state of Mississippi, Knight is no stranger to national recognition. All of his life he’s strived for one goal, and now he can officially say he’s committed to playing football at Auburn University.
“Ever since I was a little kid I would dream of playing at all these big schools and big colleges and then I get to go to the school where my favorite player ever played at, so it’s going to be fun,” said Knight with a smile. “I’m trying to go do what he did at Auburn back in 2010 which was win the National Championship, so it’ll be fun getting to do that. I’m just blessed, super blessed.”
Knight recognizes the blessings that have come his way, but it also comes with a lot of eyes watching. Pressure is a privilege if you’re in Knight’s shoes, and he knows he’s in the position he’s in for a reason.
“God isn’t going to put you through anything you can’t handle, so when you’re in those pressure situations, you’re there for a reason,” said Knight. “You go out there and give it your all, and you just have to remember you’re they’re for a reason. He’s not going to put you in any situation you can’t handle. You’ve just got to go out there and persevere through it and go through it.”
He’ll continue to go through his remarkable senior season this Friday as the Rebels hit the road to Picayune High School. We look forward to witnessing Knight’s success as a high school senior and cheering him on at the collegiate level.
