Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week, Gautier’s Angel McGee!
Tackling and lifting and throwing, oh my! This Gautier High school Senior truly does it all, and does it all well! He has made a name for himself not just along the coast, but the entire magnolia state. Get to know our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week, Angel McGee!
There’s truly nothing like a family legacy, and following that legacy is exactly what Gautier defensive lineman Angel McGee has chosen to continue.
“It started with my dad,” said Angel McGee. “My dad put me in the sport and I always played around with my cousins and my nephews when I was younger. I just wanted to take over from where my nephew left off. They set the bar for me pretty high so I’ve got to beat them.”
The cousin he’s talking about is Pascagoula graduate and former member of the Raven’s practice squad, Jaylen smith. Now, McGee may not be headed to the NFL just yet, but he’s on the right track to do so.
He was selected as an All State defensive lineman the past two years and played in the Mississippi Alabama All-Star game this past December.
“That North vesus South All-Star Game kind of felt like being in college in a sort of way with their routine, waking up early in the morning and practicing all throughout the night and stuff like that. It felt amazing and being around that much talent in one room, it was a great feeling playing around with them,” said McGee.
That’s not even close to being the only sport McGee excels in.
“Coach Savell came up to me my freshman year and asked me if I wanted to do power lifting. I wasn’t really sure, but I said it was something to do so let me go at it,” McGee said. “I power lifted my Freshman year and I didn’t make it past regional my first year. That basically started all my competitiveness in powerlifting, so the very next year I made it to state and I’ve won the past three years in a row.”
You heard him right, three years in a row that he’s been a State Champion, most recently one being last weekend where he broke a state record with a 765 pound squat, and two school records with a 640 deadlift and a 325 bench press, which is an overall total of 1695, landing him a spot on the Super 12 lifter list.
Even though those numbers can be quite intimidating, McGee chooses to change the narrative and uses it to help others.
“I can help people who don’t know what they’re doing. Many people come to me for help on how to get stronger in the weight room and how to succeed in whatever they’re doing. I like to help people. I actually mentor like three kids this year and it’s been great,” McGee said.
Laslty, McGee spends time on the Gator track and field team where he throws both shotput and discus. He is a two time participant in South State with a personal shot put record of 44 feet and discus throw of 127 feet.
McGee says his parents are his biggest advocators and supporters while playing three sports.
“My parents are very big on me in whatever I’m doing and they motivate me to keep pursuing my goals and ambitions in life.”
and he continues to stay on that track of pursuing his dreams by signing to play football at Pearl River Community College.
“I had a couple options, but PRCC really felt like home and me knowing one of the coaches that’s up there and them texting and keeping in contact with me made it feel like I was needed and was wanted up there, so that’s why I decided to go there,” said McGee.
