Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week: East Central’s Landry King!
This week’s Student Athlete of the Week has had back to back hat trick matches while also helping her team stay on top in her district. Introducing the queen of goals, East Central’s Landry King!
District play is here for our soccer teams on the gulf coast, and one team that is rising to the occasion are the girls of East Central. The Lady Hornets currently have a winning streak of six games and are undefeated in regional play. Sophomore right wing Landry King owes their success to their chemistry and ability as a team.
“Our team is the strongest it’s been in a while,” said King. “We’re just more of a team, and it’s just really good. The combinations that we make and we’re all a family and we all connect on different levels.”
Team work really does make the dream work, and the Hornets have truly mastered both sides of the ball. Not only has the defense shut out all of their opponents over the past three weeks, but the offense has scored 30 goals in the process. Seven of those alone come from King, who has had back to back hat trick games, plus one in their most recent game on Tuesday. Even with her recently being the queen of goals, she’s shocked every single time when it goes in.
“I’m just really thankful for my teammates who are supportive of me and help me achieve those goals. It’s just really exciting and a thrill of excitement,” King said. “Actually, sometimes when I score I don’t think it’s actually going to go in, so every time it goes in it’s a complete shock. I just love scoring. It’s so fun.”
Soccer is often thought of as a slow paced sport, but when King and her teammates hit the pitch, it’s quite the opposite. King says she hopes it demonstrates just how hard they work every day.
“It shows people that I enjoy the sport, put in a lot of work, and on the field I like to show people the hard work that I’ve put in, the fans and our supporters,” King said.
While running the distance with a ball at her feet, King says the sport of soccer has taught her perseverance and how to push through adversity.
“Soccer has taught me a lot of perseverance. Soccer is a tough sport and you have a lot of running and it’s taught me to push through stuff. It’s not always going to be easy the first time you do something. You have to work for it and learn as you go.”
The Lady Hornets will keep pushing to go all the way as they aim to take home the State Championship title.
“Looking forward to hopefully getting to play for a state championship this year, so we’re keeping up the hard work for a chance to play,” said King.
Their next step to holding up that gold ball is Friday night as host Gautier at 5:30pm. Best of luck to King and the rest of the Lady Hornets!
