Inside look at the Mississippi Forestry Commission Stone County station
Earlier today, News 25 was able to take an inside look at how the Mississippi Forestry Commission is helping fight wildfires on the Coast.
The commission is adding more resources to its station in Stone County. Thirty men and women are at the station day in and day out, waiting to spring into action.
The commission has added five bulldozers that will help create containment lines faster and get a quicker response if there are multiple wildfires at once.
The fire watch tower isn’t used anymore, but they are adding a cell tower so it is easier to communicate with local fire departments. Kevin Craft with the Mississippi Forestry Commission said, “Since August 1st, we’ve had over 430 fires that burned over 8,500 acres. So, we’ve had a lot of wildfires in the month of August. The rain’s going to slow it down for a day or two. But, again, we have red flag warning today and the next few days. A little bit higher winds and it’s going to dry out extremely fast. So, when that happens, we’ll be ready to pull out and start dealing with the wildfire activities again.”
There is also another station in Brookhaven that has expanded as well.
