Inmate Work Program Will Stay on the Coast

While the Mississippi Department of Corrections will phase out the current Joint State County Work Program beginning tomorrow, its suspension will not affect inmate work programs here on the Coast.
The MDOC’s decision bars counties from using state inmates for community labor. However, the inmate workers used here on the Coast are housed at adult detention centers; therefore they are county inmates as opposed to state inmates.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said, “It’s not having any effect on Jackson County. So, we will still have what we always had, you know, cleaning up, picking up on the side of the road and doing things like that. Thankfully, ours is not closing.”
Coast sheriffs say they are fortunate the MDOC’s decision will not affect us here on the Coast.
