Inmate at George County jail dies in medical incident

The George County Regional Correctional Facility has confirmed the death of an inmate due to a medical incident that happened while he was being processed into the jail.

57-year-old Thomas Stringfellow of Lucedale died Monday.

Stringfellow had been taken to the jail on a bench warrant. During the intake process, he began exhibiting unusual symptoms.

Staff immediately contacted emergency services and Stringfellow was taken by ambulance to George Regional Hospital. Stringfellow later died at the hospital.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Stringfellow,” said Sheriff Mitchell Mixon. “The health and safety of individuals in our care is our highest priority. We are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this tragic incident.”

An internal review has been initiated, and the incident is under investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

The George County Sheriff’s Office and GCRCF are also working closely with the George County Coroner’s Office and other relevant authorities to determine the circumstances leading to Stringfellow’s death.

As mandated by Mississippi state statute, an autopsy will be conducted for all in-custody deaths to determine the official cause.

Additional information will be shared as it becomes available, subject to the ongoing investigation. The George County Sheriff’s Office and GCRCF remains committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in its operations.
