Ingalls Apprenticeship Class Prepares for Graduation
Today, a group of Ingalls Shipbuilding apprentices began preparations to bring their time at the Haley Reeves Barbour Maritime Training Academy to a close.
The class, which contains over 40 students, picked up their cap and gowns and started practicing their graduation ceremony this morning.
Ingalls Shipbuilding’s apprentice program has been molding future Ingalls employees since 1952. The Training Academy, located on the Ingalls property, consists of two to four year programs for students interested in shipbuilding. Students complete programs like welding and ship lifter with hopes to work for the company after graduation.
Outstanding Apprentice of the Year Jason Carter said, “It’s a major landmark. I’ve been looking to get into this program for four years. It’s a major event for me.”
Ingalls VP, Human Resources and Administration Edmond Hughes said, “We expect these individuals to have long careers with Ingalls Shipbuilding and hopefully again this is the first step. Currently, individuals in our organization, we have about 1500 individuals who are former apprentice alumni.”
The apprentice commencement ceremony will take place Saturday, August 22nd at the Pelican Landing Center in Moss Point.
