Impaired driving enforcement in Gulfport
Police officers in Mississippi are getting advanced lessons on DUI enforcement.
About a dozen officers from across the state are taking classes at the Gulfport Police Department. These classes focus on drug impaired driving, where officers go a step further than the standard field sobriety tests. Some of the tests include standing on one leg, seeing if a person can cross their eyes, and walking and turning without losing balance.
These impaired drivers can be on different inhalants or solvents which presents an immediate danger to other drivers. Director of Training Rob Banks said, “The worst thing it can cause is death and impaired driving deaths are something we can prevent. We may not be able to prevent a homicide that may or may not happen with the next hour, but we know that someone is going to drive impaired today and if we’re out there trying to find those people then we can prevent that.”
The advanced classes consist of two eight hour courses. Officers can also go through an expert class on impaired driving enforcement.
