IMMS reaches out to local children
The Institute of Marine Mammal Studies is reaching out to get local children excited about marine education with Student Sunday.
The institute has set aside scholarships that will allow 200 children to visit the institute this summer, where they can enjoy the many educational programs offered. The children that will be benefiting from the program might have never had a chance to attend the institute without the scholarships.
That is why Gulfport Councilwoman Ella Holmes-Hines reached out to the director of the institute, Dr. Moby Solangi, about establishing the program. “This is so exciting that there is a scholarship for over 200 kids that are low to mod underprivileged children will have an opportunity to come to this facility and enjoy the same environment and marine science that is going to make a difference,” said Hines.
Dr. Solangi said, “We have a lot of deserving kids. With the budgets being slashed for education and outreach some of these kids cannot come here or afford to come here so we are providing scholarships through Ella and other councilmen to bring students here.”
Members of the Magnolia Grove Kids of Distinction were some of the first to take advantage of that new program.
