I-110 Loop Lighting

The I-110 Loop is the grand entrance to downtown Biloxi and it just got a little brighter. Harrison County Supervisor Windy Swetman and MDOT flipped the switch on phase two of the beautification project.
By day, the I-110 Loop leads people traveling from the interstate on to Highway 90. It’s surrounded by palm trees on the beach and the boulevard. But, by night, it will now turn into a grand entrance illuminated by 201 newly installed LED lights. Harrison County Supervisor Windy Swetman said, “When you come to South Mississippi, when you come around I-110 and you hit that loop, hopefully you’re going to have the ‘wow factor’ that we have here tonight, seeing that. It’s absolutely beautiful.”
Lighting the loop is phase two of a beautification project, spearheaded by Swetman, Harrison County and MDOT. It’s funded through a $500,000 grant. Southern District Transportation Commissioner Tom King says illuminating the loop will be a pretty sight to see but it will also serve as a way to keep drivers, pedestrians and those late night fishermen safe. “When you put lighting there, you have a lot of people that walk around and walk under on the boardwalk and everything else. It will help a whole lot.”
These energy efficient lights won’t only make travel safer but it will also save the city money in the long run by not placing a strain on the city’s power bill.
For Swetman, he’s just excited to see his final project on the Harrison County Board of Supervisors come to fruition. “What a way to go,” said Swetman, “I couldn’t be more proud right now of our team and this project. Just honored to have been able to lead the project and know that I’m able to leave this for all of South Mississippi is just a real honor.”
Phase three of the project will include landscaping and bridge cleaning. No word yet on when that phase will begin.
