I-10 re-opens to traffic after firefighters get grass fire under control

Interstate 10 is open to traffic in eastbound and westbound lanes today after a grass fire forced the highway to be closed in both directions.

Mississippi Department of Transportation said the highway re-opened about 1 a.m. today after closing just after 2 p.m. Friday.

A grass fire on the side of Interstate 10 and in the median near Mile Marker 8 was generating heavy smoke — prompting officials to shut down traffic in both directions while firefighters from all over Hancock County battled the flames.

First responders remain in the area to watch for hotspots. Motorists should be aware there are firefighters on the the side of the roadways.
