Hurricane Hunters monitor atmospheric river in the Pacific Northwest

Now that hurricane season is over, the Hurricane Hunters at Keesler Air Force Base are tracking another kind of atmospheric phenomenon.

These are pictures of the two Keesler-based WC-130J Super Hercules Aircraft patrolling the skies over the Pacific Northwest to monitor an atmospheric river.

Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow regions in the atmosphere that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics.

Crews from the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron will continue monitoring the river through the rest of the week.
