Hundreds of camellias on display at MS Gulf Coast Camellia Society Show

Saturday in Gulfport, hundreds of camellias were on display at the 68th annual Camellia Show at the Lyman Community Center.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Camellia Society has been around close to 70 years with the purpose of promoting the propagation and enjoyment of camellias for all gardeners.

Plant lovers from across the Coast gathered to sell camellias and compete against one another.

A bloom competition took place, where the flowers were broken up into different categories and judged based on their species and size. MS Gulf Coast Camellia Society President Jason Dean said, “Camellias have been a really popular gardening ornamental here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for many, many years. I have always loved that they are a flower that blooms in the winter time when really nothing else blooms.”

Camellias are ranked as one of the best flowering shrubs.
