Humane Society of the United States evacuates animals from threatened areas
Today, the Humane Society of the United States visited the Humane Society of South Mississippi to evacuate animals in an attempt to clear the shelters due to recent tropical systems that threatened the Coast.
This morning, the Humane Society transported 120 sheltered pets to partnering shelters. The goal of this operation was to get as many pets to other shelters in order to create space at the South Mississippi location and other shelters.
Since the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina 15 years ago, Humane Societies are ensuring that pets will be safe if another storm were to hit.
The HSUS transported more than 220 dogs and cats from shelters in Beaumont, Texas, Gulfport, Mississippi, and cities in Louisiana. HSSM Development Director Katie King said, “They hauled off 38 pets this morning and then 120 total between yesterday and today. So we’re really grateful for them and their rapid response to our emergencies and our, you know, need and also to the partner shelters across the U.S.”
If you are interested in helping these animals find their forever homes, the Humane Society of South Mississippi is hosting a ‘Clear the Shelters’ event this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their location.
