Humane Society Receives Grant to Improve Love Train Program
They received a $35,000 grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s Jack A. and Gertrude W. Wilson Animal Welfare Fund. The money will go towards purchasing a new, large scale truck and trailer to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the Love Train Transport Program. The program takes the surplus of adoptable pets in south Mississippi and transports them to shelters in other parts of the country or even Canada, where the demand for adoptable pets often exceeds the number of pets in their local shelters.
Krystyna Schmitt, Marketing Specialist for H.S.S.M., says, “Our current program is kind of restricted because of our smaller vehicle sizes, but we have partner shelters that are willing to take our excess adoptables that can take in 60, 80, or even 100 pets at a time. This truck and trailer will allow us to do that in one transport rather than in five separate transports, which is great for efficiency and of course upping our live release rate here at the Humane Society of South Mississippi.”
The Love Train Transport Program has saved more than 7,000 pets from being euthanized in the Coast community.
