Humane Society of South Mississippi introduces Litter League program
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) — The Humane Society of South Mississippi is encouraging animal lovers to step up to the plate with the introduction of its new Litter League.
“So the Litter League program is a program started by our managers and our volunteer coordinator to help us find volunteers specific for helping to clean our off-site cats at different locations,” HSSM Adoptions Manager Sky Dennis said. “We have partnerships with PetSmart Charities and Petco Love to bring cats there to do adoptions.”
HSSM partners with two PetSmart locations in D’Iberville and Gulfport as well as Petco in Biloxi. They’ve had success in adopting out of those larger stores, with 51 cats finding forever homes in the month of July alone.
While humane society employees still work with the animals at off-site locations, they need volunteers to pitch in so that the best possible care can be given to all furry friends within the organization.
“We jump back and forth, but it would be very helpful to find volunteers that would love to hang out with our kitties there and make sure they’re happy,” Dennis explained.
Volunteers could take care of anywhere between two and eight cats per visit, depending on the location. The tasks are simple but important, according to Dennis.
“[It’s] pretty much making sure they’re clean, they’re fed, they’re watered and that they’re looking okay, they don’t need any kind of vaccines — in that case, then they’ll let us know that they need to be brought back to us,” Dennis explained, “And just making sure that… it’s important since they’re at an off-site location to look, to make sure that people are going there and they’re seeing that they’re happy and they want to adopt them.”
Those who are interested in joining the team of volunteers can attend orientation sessions each Wednesday at 3:45 at HSSM’s main campus in Gulfport. There is also information available for those who aren’t sure about inking that deal just yet.
“If you’re interested in doing the Litter League program, you can find out more information at volunteer@hssm.org or on our website at hssm.org,” Dennis said.
