Hugh Freeze resigns from Ole Miss

The hot seat has frozen over at Ole Miss in the wake of today’s resignation from head football Coach Hugh Freeze. As it turns out, last week’s lawsuit filed by former head man Houston Nutt had ramifications much larger than hard-hitting questions at SEC Media Days.
According to USA Today, Freeze stepped down tonight effective immediately because of a phone call he reportedly made to a number associated with an escort service as detailed in Nutt’s case against his former employer. Pat Forde from Yahoo Sports first broke the story.
The federal lawsuit was filed one day before the Rebels were scheduled to speak at SEC Media Days, alleging Freeze as well as other school officials violated the terms of Nutt’s severance agreement with Ole Miss.
The university has been under investigation by the NCAA for nearly five years and is currently being charged with 21 allegations against the football program, most notably among them being lack of institutional control and a failure to monitor.
Tonight, school officials held an emergency press conference to further address Freeze’s sudden departure, one they claim to be totally unrelated to the investigation.Ole Miss Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter said, “This is a very hard day. This is a very painful decision, but it is the right decision. While Coach Freeze served our university well in many regards during his tenure, we simply cannot accept the conduct in his personal life that we have discovered.”
Ole Miss Vice Chancellor of Intercollegiate Athletics Ross Bjork said, “We would have exercised the termination clause in our contract for moral turpitude. We would have exercised termination for cause, yes. What was the right decision? If all of this information was public, what is the right decision for the institution?”
Ole Miss is still awaiting its verdict from the NCAA. They have already self-imposed a post-season ban for 2017. Matt Luke will step in as the interim coach.
