HSSM receives grant from PetSmart charities to help more adoptable pets find families in Harrison County
GULFPORT, MS – 3/18/24 – The Humane Society of South Mississippi has received a $25,000 grant from PetSmart Charities® to help prepare more pets in Harrison County for adoption.
Some four million pets find themselves in U.S. shelters each year. In partnership with PetSmart Charities, the Humane Society of South Mississippi will bring adoptable pets to two PetSmart locations in support of National Adoption Week, taking place March 18 – 24, 2024.
This grant will fund the necessary care to provide 400 cats and dogs for adoption at PetSmart stores, including costs of spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping, and supplies for operating successful adoption events.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generous support of this grant, which will propel our efforts to reduce pet homelessness in our community. This grant allows us to offset the expenses of veterinary care provided prior to adoption release, which would otherwise be shouldered by our adopters,” said Bianca Janik, Director of Operations of the Humane Society of South “By bringing our adoptable pets directly to the community, we not only find loving homes but also empower new pet parents with the resources they need for a successful start.”

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week is a special time during the year. PetSmart stores feature adoptable pets to meet and cuddle in spacious areas, and staff and volunteers are on-hand to make introductions and answer questions. Potential pet parents can also learn about the products and services they’ll need for the best possible start with their new family members.
