HSSM honors volunteers with dedication of new ‘tail trail’ garden

The Humane Society of South Mississippi spent the lunch hour thanking folks for their hard work.

Celebrating Animal Control Officers Appreciation Week and Volunteers Week, which is next week, HSSM served hamburgers, hot dogs, and sweets to the volunteers and officers.

HSSM officials talked about how much the volunteers do for the shelter and how much they appreciate the officers who find and bring in many of the strays that the shelter can then reunite with families or find new homes for the ones that have no home.

The shelter also took the opportunity to open a sensory enrichment garden and ‘tail trail’ on the property, dedicated to the volunteers who come to the shelter to help with the animals there.

Katie King with HSSM said the double-fenced garden will allow animals to walk around off leash. “This is our newest addition here at the shelter, it’s the sensory enrichment garden and tail trail. And today we are dedicating it to our amazing, selfless volunteers because they are always here, walking dogs, and we wanted to provide a relaxing space to enjoy being at the shelter. It’s a little more relaxing than being inside at the shelter so they can really bond with the animals and have that special one-on-one time.”

The Humane Society is located on Highway 49 just south of 28th Street in Gulfport.
