How Mississippi Power prepares for winter weather

As the temperature drops again tonight, Mississippi Power is enacting its winter weather plan.

The organization starts prepping, however, for winter weather long before the wind chill hits.

Starting in October, Mississippi Power starts wrapping equipment and pipes that could be exposed to the elements.

Then, Mississippi Power will check each power plant to make sure it has the resources needed to serve the community during severe weather.

When weather poses a risk to power, employees will stay at the plants so they can stay safe while also being ready to act if necessary.

It may seem extreme, but preparing in advance helps keep the heat on.

“That’s the whole point of being proactive. It’s year-round,” said Jeff Shepard, Mississippi Power Spokesman. “Our planning, whether it’s getting ready for a storm season in the summer or winter weather season this time of year, we’re always thinking of the next events and being prepared ahead of time.”
