Why the horse show is worth galloping over to
Pony up! The 19th annual Winter Classics Horse Show is on the Coast. It’s only galloping for one more weekend. News 25’s Gina Tomlinson introduces us to the winning duo of Sunday’s main event.
Galloping full speed ahead, clearing obstacles without a flaw, Caprachello II has what it takes to win. Just ask his right hand rider, Frank Owens. Living on a ranch in San Antonio, the two have been partners in competition for years. “Has the scope and the carefulness to jump through these bigger classes. When they like you, they try as hard as they can for you and it’s a lot of fun jumping those jumps.”
Leaping over hurdles with perfect strides landed Owens and Chello the first place prize in the Gulf Coast Winter Classics Horse Show’s main event Sunday. “Get there, watching the last couple go and wondering how it’s going to work out for you. Today, it worked out for me,” said Owen.
If you call winning over $40,000 working out. That was the grand prix top prize, an obstacle course the rider has to clear without knocking any bars down.
The winter horse show draws in hundreds from all across the country to the Harrison County Fairgrounds, saddling up a big economic impact for the six weeks the show is on the Coast.
The horses usually start their training around three to four years old. “You introduce them to the sport, as far as jumping, when they’re young and slowly bring them along. They’re creatures of habit,” said Owens.
