Home Schoolers Could Be Allowed in Public Clubs & Sports
The bill, named after Tim Tebow, the most well-known homeschooled professional athlete, hopes to open more opportunities for those who don’t attend public school. However, homeschooling mothers on the Gulf Coast are saying there’s more in the fine print. The bill would require homeschooled students and their parents to provide documentation of academic standards before they are allowed to participate. Many homeschooling mothers say this infringes on their right to teach what they feel is important.
Erica Moore, a homeschooling mother, says, “The bill doesn’t actually list what kind of documentation they’re going to require, right? So it’s kind of an open door as to what they’re gonna’ require, and if you look at a lot of states with similar bills in place, that allow homeschooled kids to play in public school sports, those states have very strict guidelines about what they allow homeschoolers to teach.”
