Holding off on memorandum with MDOT

This afternoon, the Gulfport City Council suspended a resolution to take over the maintenance of lighting along Highway 49 in the area between Turkey Creek and Orange Grove Road.
Mayor Billy Hewes explained to the council if the resolution had passed, the transition process wouldn’t begin any time in the near future.
Mayor Hewes went on to say until the Mississippi Department of Transportation can facilitate this transition to LED lighting the city will continue to consider avenues of improvement for the area. “We’ve just kind of put it on hold. The resolution would seek to have the City of Gulfport take over the lights for the maintenance, but until MDOT is able to convert those to LED lighting, we’re not prepared to do that. In the process of talking to Commissioner King about this, one thing we’ve discussed as well is contemplating putting a crosswalk in that vicinity and maybe even sidewalks.”
During the discussion, multiple city council members were adamant the section of Highway 49 should be lit in a fashion similar to the stretch just north of downtown Gulfport.
