Highway 49 improvements underway in Harrison County
HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- In Harrison County, the widening project on Highway 49 continues.
Crews are making progress as they widen the highway from four to six lanes from O’Neal Road to north of School Road.
The work underway includes the construction of a displaced left-turn intersection, also known as a continuous flow intersection, at state route 53 and Highway 49.
Widening is almost complete on the southbound side of Highway 49 while earthwork, stone base placement, and paving continue on the northbound side.
The widening project is expected to be completed in 2027.
Also on 49, a pedestrian improvement project is almost done from Turkey Creek to just north of Creosote Road.
This project includes a pedestrian pathway, designated crosswalks, and a median barrier with fencing.
MDOT says major elements of the project are done.
The remaining tasks include finalizing traffic signal upgrades and placing permanent striping.
This work is expected to wrap up this fall.
