High school football summer workouts begin for schools on the Mississippi Gulf Coast

It’s summer time for students here on the coast, but for those student-athletes who will be hitting the gridiron for high school football game sin August, summer isn’t a time spent relaxing or looked at as a day off.

Many high school programs on the Mississippi Gulf coast began summer workouts this week. While summer for many students is spent out by the pool or spending time with friends, for high school football players it’s a time to grow as a team and gear up for the first week of the season on Friday, Aug. 30. Sports 25 had the chance to speak with a pair of high school coaches this week about why summer workouts are so important for their teams come August.

“Oh, summer is everything to us, said Ocean Springs head coach Jake Bramlett. “Spring training is great but there’s always a few kids missing with baseball or a few people with track, things like that. In the summer you get your full team together, and even bringing in some of the upcoming ninth graders to get that work in with the older guys and just make sure they are learning the right way to do things. I feel like we have a really good setup here for our summers. The kids are always up here until about 11:30 or so and they do a really good job about putting work those days. We get about 24 days during the summer to do a lot of stuff.”

“”Well it is going really good, the guys worked really hard in the weight room in the off-season,” said first-year Biloxi Indiana head coach Jamey Dubose, “We dedicated ourselves in their from several months to five days a week to get stronger and I feel like we may great strides. We are looking forward to, right now, every day. Taking it one day at a time, you know, our motto is one percent better every day and our guys have really accepted that and I think they are really bought in to what we are doing and what’s going on.”

It’s clear that summer workouts are important to every team here on the coast , not just Ocean Springs and Biloxi, and WXXV is counting down the days to Friday Night Lights as the football season is right around the corner.
