Hepatitis C screenings in Biloxi

Today in Biloxi a Hepatitis C Blitz Event took place at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health System.
Officials offered free hep-c screenings to veterans on the Gulf Coast. These screenings were targeted to veterans born between 1945 and 1965. If they come back positive for hep-c, VA officials will get them into the clinic for treatment.
Members of the VA tell News 25 between four and 17 percent of veterans are affected with hep-c and most are not aware because of the lack of symptoms. Hep-C Case Manager Tracy Crebier said, “They can have it for decades and not have any symptoms and by the time they have the symptoms it progresses into liver cancer and ultimately it can cause death.”
The screenings were open to veterans even if you are not in the VA health system. Organizers say a total of 71 veterans were tested today.
