HB 280 Referred to Constitution Committee

The state’s house education committee has voted to give the state authority to remove the accreditation of any school district that violates state law or the Mississippi constitution.
Opponents of House Bill 280 feel that the committee is looking to reprimand schools that have chosen not to fly the state flag. Co-author of the bill House Representative Dana Criswell tells News 25 that the bill has been in the works for several years and will provide some protection for Mississippi’s teachers who are not covered under the state’s whistle blower law. “It’s been a bill that since several years ago that he’s had. It never originated with anything to do with the flag. The Department of Education has no recourse if they find that a school district is doing something that’s in violation of the law. One of the things that we’re working on in committee in this bill is to find a method within this bill to either cover teachers under whistle blower or put it in this bill.”
House Bill 280 will be referred to the constitution committee for consideration.
