Hattiesburg Regional Rain Delay: Southern Miss vs. MSU postponed until 5:45
After waiting out a rain delay of more than four hours, Southern Miss and Mississippi State finally got things rolling in the Hattiesburg Regional final at 5:45.
Originally slated to start at 1 p.m., Mother Nature had other ideas, postponing the game until 5:45. No strangers to bad weather, the grounds crew was out in full force once again today, as has been the case all weekend long. Since Saturday, the tarp alone has come on and off the field about eight times.
While that makes for some long hours at the ballpark, the efforts of the grounds crew haven’t gone unnoticed by the fans in the Right Field Roost. Southern Miss Superintendent of Athletic Fields Todd Hawkins said, “A lot more, and mother nature hasn’t helped, but we’re getting by. And we’re ready to get it over with and get our feet dried out.”
Southern Miss Grounds Crew Attendant Jerry Wren said, “There is no I in Team. We’re all one group, and we try to help each other out and do what we can and help where we can do. We just help each other out.”
Southern Miss Fan Ben Waddle said, “They’re definitely some kind of MVP, I’ll tell you that. They are the most valuable people I see right now. I mean shoot, they’re out here walking around making sure the grass is ready to go. Dirt looks good, I mean they might be the tournament MVP. I would definitely keep them in the discussion for it.”
On Saturday, two games were rained out altogether due to a record rain fall in the Hub City.
