Harrison County teachers learn a lesson ahead of school year

Harrison County teachers and principals did a little learning themselves before heading into the new school year.
“Teach the stuff and cut the fluff” is what Dr. Anita Archer told these educators as she shared her effective teaching strategies. Dr. Archer is an award winning educator, author, and school district consultant nationally known for her seminars on explicit instruction.
The goal of this workshop is to help children become more involved and engaged learners, especially students who are facing learning challenges. Director of Federal Programs for Harrison County Schools Melissa M. Garrison said, “There are times where we don’t want children to just discover anything. We want to explicitly teach them something because when you try to use any kind of discovery method sometime what happen is there’s no background information and the child can get the wrong answer and that wastes time and we don’t have a lot of time and the time we do have we want to spend getting right to this is the standard that we have to teach, this is what you need to know.”
Today’s session was geared towards principals and lead teachers. Tomorrow Dr. Archer will speak to teachers who are new employees to the school district.
