Harrison County Superintendent Set to Retire

Superintendent Henry Arledge is saying farewell after working in the Harrison County School District for 36 years. His experience as superintendent has been rewarding but was also rough at times. “Katrina was the biggest challenge,” said Arledge, “especially the first month or six weeks, you know, trying to help about 250 employees; Two hundred and forty that were in trouble from their homes being destroyed.”
Arledge tells News 25 the biggest change he has seen over the past three decades has been teacher development and training. He hopes the next superintendent continues to help the school district grow. “You have to work with parents and listen to the parents and listen to problems and try to address the problems. It’s not a one man show, it’s who you surround yourself with to make the job work, is what it amounts to.”
Principals in the school district say the work Superintendent Arledge has done has exceeded their expectations and every decision he makes is in the best interest of the kids. Natasha Williams, principal at Crossroads Elementary School, said, “He has high expectations for every employee in the school district from the bus driver to the administrators to the directors.”
Arledge plans on traveling with his wife during his retirement but still needs to do his chores at home. “I probably still need to cut a lot of grass and things of that nature. But, I’ll enjoy it, won’t have to get up and be at work. I feel like I have to be one of the first ones at work and one of the last ones to leave, you know.”
“I will say that we are going to truly miss him. It has been a pleasure to work for him,” said Williams.
Superintendent Henry Arledge is officially leaving the position in December of this year.
