Harrison County fire has burned more than 800 acres
Harrison County Fire and Rescue along with U.S. Forest Services and Mississippi Forestry Commission continue to work against a several hundred acre brush fire along Carson Road in Harrison County.
Officials received reports of a brush fire around 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Scenes on the ground showed large plumes of smoke engulfing the surrounding area with several brush fires scattered along the road.
Initially the fire was expected to affect around 60-70 acres, but as of 9 p.m. Wednesday night, the Mississippi Forestry Commission confirmed that the fire has affected 800 acres and is 25% contained.
Kevin Craft with the Mississippi Forestry Commission said Thursday morning that those numbers have not changed but are expected to go up as the Forestry Commission gets a better judge of the fire.
There were some structures in the area that were threatened by the fire, but those have been largely protected.
As for the smoky haze that has settled over the northern part of the county, Craft said it will remain for a few days until a good rain or even a heavy dew comes in to knock down the smoke.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, Craft said.
