Harrison County deputies stop IRS scam targeting elderly woman

HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV) — A Harrison County woman is out tens of thousands of dollars after falling victim to an IRS scam—but quick thinking by a local shipping clerk helped prevent even more losses.

Harrison County Sheriff’s Office say the elderly woman was preparing to mail $25,000 in cash from a shipping store in Long Beach, believing the money was needed to pay outstanding taxes and avoid legal trouble.

A clerk at the business became suspicious after noticing a man on the phone directing the woman through the shipping process, along with the unusual packaging and large amount of cash.

Investigators say when the woman couldn’t clearly explain who the recipient of the money was, the clerk contacted the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were able to intercept the package before it was shipped, ultimately returning the full amount of money to the victim.

During the investigation, investigators learned the woman had already sent more than $30,000 in previous payments as part of the same scam.

Authorities say these schemes often target elderly or vulnerable individuals, using threats of arrest or penalties to pressure victims into sending money quickly—often in cash.

The Department of Homeland Security is now assisting in what the sheriff’s office says is an active, ongoing investigation. Deputies say they have also gathered valuable evidence that could help identify those responsible.

Investigators want to emphasize to the general public that federal or state government agencies will never call and demand immediate payment, especially in the form of cash.

Anyone who believes they or someone they know may be the victim of a scam is encouraged to contact your local law enforcement agency.
