Harrison County Christmas Recycling Event

The numbers are in and Harrison County showed out and showed up for sustainability.

The Harrison County Christmas Cardboard Recycling event ran from 8 a.m. until noon on the 28th. This was an opportunity for residents to drop off their holiday boxes and cardboard to be recycled.

At their four locations they collected a whopping 2.19 tons of cardboard. Considering cardboard is lightweight, this is a substantial amount.

For organizers it is all about helping our local environment. Harrison County Solid Waste Coordinator Alan Lane said, “We wanted to do this for several reasons. The first being to keep this material out of the landfills to where it can be used again being recycled. The second reason is security. If you put the boxes outside your home and people see what you got for Christmas and you become a target for theft. But this was just a great job all around from the residents and they’re the ones who make this program successful.”

The Harrison County Utility Authority and Beautification Commission hope to expand next year’s event to six locations.
